Windows just recently released a new update that promises better security, increase time management and syncing to Android phones (7.0 or later), plus more.
However, in the wake of these new events many people have ran into obstacles trying to get this update installed. If your Windows 10 update is failing, we’ve compiled a list of the top methods that worked for other users to resolve this issue.
Method 1: Disable Antivirus
All Antivirus programs will have different methods to disable it.
The simplest way is by finding your antivirus running in the background down in the bottom right hand corner near your Date and Time. It can also be located in your System Tray Icon. This will be in the same corner as a little carrot ^ pointing up. Click this and find the icon with your antivirus software.
Once you find the antivirus icon, you’ll right click and you might have an “Exit” option, “Shutdown Protection” or some will instead say “Pause Protection”.
If so, click this and you will be asked for the duration. Select “Until Reboot” and save your settings.
If you’re still stuck, simply search Google on how to shut down or pause your specific antivirus provider.
Method 2: Turn Off Metered Connections
If updates are failing repeatedly over and over again, turn off ‘Metered Connection‘ in your network connection settings:
- Go to your Start Menu and type “wifi’ and then hit enter.
- In the window that pops up locate your WiFi’s name and click it.
- Scroll down the page a bit and you can slide the switch next to Metered connection to “Off”.
- Restart the PC and try again.
Method 3: Check That You Have Enough Space

You can check how much free space you have by selecting Windows > type: File Explorer > in the left panel select “This PC” or “Computer”.
This should display your Local Disk (C:) with a meter bar and the amount of space that’s still free.
Method 4: Windows Update Troubleshooter
Windows has a built-in troubleshooter for Windows Updates:
- Select your Start menu and type “troubleshoot”
- Hit Enter and there should be many options.
- Locate “Resolve problems with installing Windows Update”
- Follow the troubleshooter prompt and be sure to select As Administrator when asked.
Method 5: Reset Windows Update Services
Using Services, you can stop the Windows Update component forcing it to restart.
Select your Start Menu and type “services.msc”.
Scroll down to the very bottom and look for Windows Update.
Right click and select “Restart”.
Method 6: Run SFC Scan
This will check for any violations with your registry keys. This scan will also take some time, sometimes up to several hours. So be prepared to let this scan run entirely before shutting off your computer.

Method 7: Use Microsoft Update Assistant
Microsoft provides an online wizard to walk you through downloading the update. Visit their link below and follow the on screen prompts:

Method 8: Download Updates Manually
By visiting Microsoft’s Update’s Catalog, you can actually search for any updates you want to download. When someone has problems with Windows Update Failing, the PC might be too far behind. Going back and installing older updates can trigger Windows to resolve the rest of your updates. When your updates fail, they should display which update they are with a “KB” number. For example: KB4512508
Find and copy any of the KB numbers Windows Update displays and search the site for that KB number.
NOTE: be sure to install the right download for your Operating System!! You can find this by selecting your Start Menu > type “Control Panel” and hit enter. Make sure the “View by:” in the top right corner is set to Category. Select “System and Security” then “System”.
