Live Photos was a new feature first introduced by Apple iOS with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Similar to a GIF, they aren’t a video but they aren’t a picture either.
There are 2 ways you can view these types of files on a computer with a Windows OS (Operating System).
SAFE METHOD: use a media application that supports .MOV or .JPEG file types
If your PC is new enough, you can simply use a media application on the device. The default Films & TV app will work and other media programs that support .MOV and .JPEG file formats will do just fine.
In order for your media program to locate and open the file, you’ll need to be sure the files are saved in a location that’s stored on the device. Start by first transferring your files to the desired location, then simply double click the file to view.
Other supported media applications include: Quicktime Player, Roxio Toast and Roxio Popcorn, Adobe Flash, Windows Media Player, 3ivx.
LESS SAFE METHOD: convert live photos to GIF format*
While we’d strongly recommend only looking for a media program that supports viewing Live Photos, you can convert the file to a .GIF using free GIF converter programs online, apps on your phone, or GIF converting websites.
We won’t provide an example of the many applications you can find because sometimes these are bundled with malware or unnecessary permissions in order to track your digital behavior. You can do a simple search online to find these. Additionally it should be mentioned, this method typically lessens the file quality.
*If you choose this method, proceed with caution and do your research to know the security and legitimacy of the app or website.*
